Owie Spray

Aug 28, 2019 | Recipes

As a mom of three active boys, I tend to more owies than I can count! I am thrilled my boys love to be outside daily. They run, ride bikes and scooters, play with sticks and rocks and build forts; all while seeming to be a tad too rough and their precious skin pays the price.

That’s why I can’t live without my homemade Owie Spray and have it on hand at all times. We use this daily for all of our family members, including our dogs – Addie, our German Shepherd, and Elsie, our Golden Retriever. Just as I would spray it on the kids’ skin, I spray it on the dogs when their skin could use some extra care.

The Owie Spray is so soothing to the skin and lips and is a must have after spending too much time in the sun or wind. We also love it to soothe a sore baby bum, it is fantastic on a razor burn and we love to use on any irritated or itchy skin including spritzing it on all owies before applying a band-aid.

The Owie Spray also tends to calm my children’s emotions quickly. I believe this is a combination of lavender and frankincense that are not only wonderful for soothing skin but also for relaxing and calming the emotions. I have noticed many times that when one child is crying because they have an owie, another will instantly run to grab the owie spray and assist with applying it. It is encouraging to see that the natural solutions we have modeled to the boys since birth, have become so ingrained that they are second nature when a need arises.

My blend for Owie Spray contains dōTERRA’s Frankincense, Lavender, Tea Tree and Helichrysum oils along with Fractionated Coconut oil to help soothe the skin.

Frankincense oil is one of the key ingredients in the Owie Spray. It is derived from a potent tree resin and thought of as the “king of oils” due to its many uses and benefits. When used topically it helps to rejuvenate the appearance of the skin, as well as reduce skin imperfections. These properties make it a great addition to help promote skin healing.

Along with its lovely scent, Lavender is known for its calming properties and has been used for centuries to promote relaxation. When applied topically, Lavender oil can also help reduce the appearance of skin imperfections and provides a calming aroma. The calming properties are great to help kids ease their emotions. Owies can definitely put a damper on play time, but the soothing properties of lavender help to get kids back up and running in no time.

Tea Tree, also referred to as melaleuca, is a powerful oil that is frequently used to soothe and calm the skin. Historically used by the Aboriginal people of Australia, Tea Tree can be applied to mild skin irritations to promote a cooling effect. This cooling effect helps to ease the discomfort that comes along with distressed skin, making it quite effective in the Owie Spray.

Although Helichrysum is optional in this spray, it is highly recommended due to its rejuvenating benefits for the skin. Helichrysum is a plant with small yellow, ball-shaped flowers and is often referred to as the Everlasting or Immortal Flower. It has been used in herbal health since ancient Greek times and is often found in anti-aging products due to its ability to improve complexion, reduce the appearance of blemishes and promote overall skin health. Putting Helichrysum in your Owie Spray will offer an added benefit for skin that is trying to heal.

The Owie Spray is easy to make and will last a few months or longer (depending on how many owies your kiddos get!). This recipe is also great for other times when your skin needs some immediate attention. It can be used on sweaty, itchy feet after a long day or prior to putting on socks in the morning, as well as on a dry scalp for adults and children before shampooing. Due to its many uses, this spray has been a staple in our home for years and we always have it in an easy to find spot. To make your own Owie Spray, simply follow the recipe below. Here is a great starter kit with the staple oils needed for Owie spray.
